It’s less than two weeks until we don our thermals and head to Reykjavik for DesignMarch 2014. In this post, we take a look at some of the product design shows taking place during the event.

Third year product design students at Iceland’s Academy of the Arts will exhibit a collection of pieces in Rendez-Wood, a show that explore the value and potential of Icelandic wood – a rare commodity in the nearly treeless Icelandic landscape. Local Icelandic materials are also explored in Austurland : Designs from Nowhere. The exhibition features pieces from four international designers – Julia Lohmnann, Max Lamb, Thorunn Arnadottir and Gero Grundmann – who were invited to East Iceland to work with the seaweed, rock, antler and other materials found in that region. Staka, at 38 þrep, features designs by Maria Kristin Jonsdottir, inspired by Icealandic landscapes.

ShopShow, a travelling exhibition of Nordic design, will open at Hafnarborg. The show explores the interplay of production and consumerism and features Icelandic design teams Hugdetta and Vik Prjonsdottir. Design studio Postulina will present its Glacial Dishware, inspired by glaciers at Crymogea. The work will be accompanied by photography by Vigfus Birgisson.

The Greek myth of Medusa the Gorgon serves as the inspiration for Swedish designer Petra Lila’s exhibition at Hannesarholt. Items in the show include collaborative pieces with Vík Prjónsdóttir. Design team Volki will preview its indoor/outdoor furniture range inspired by lighthouse architecture at the newly opened Mengi exhibition space.
